S.C. Senate passes bill outlawing most abortions. The South Carolina Senate passed a bill Thursday in a 30-13 vote that outlaws almost all abortions in the state, overcoming years of hurdles thanks in part to Republicans winning new seats in last year’s election. It has passed the House easily in previous years and Gov. Henry McMaster has said he will sign it as soon as he can. Source: The State

Initial unemployment claims in South Carolina drop by 1,640 in week. Initial unemployment claims topped 400 in three S.C. counties for the week ending Jan. 23, when the state saw a total of 5,043 initial claims filed, representing a drop of 1,640 from the 6,683 filed the previous week, according to S.C. Retroactive teacher raises advance in S.C. House. The South Carolina House of Representatives gave key approval Thursday to a bill to reinstate some teacher raises in to this year’s budget, restoring “step increase” raises for teachers amounting to several hundred dollars a year given annually. Charleston County Schools invests $700,000 in new technology for virtual schooling. With hundreds of students still learning from home, the Charleston County School District purchased and placed 734 cameras in schools across the district at a cost of $711,747.24.
