A museum, especially one as old and as important as The Gibbes, deserves a quality restaurant. Finally, after a false start, it’s getting one.
Restaurateur Michael Shemtov will open The Daily at the Gibbes in early 2018, according to a press release. The Daily takes over The Gibbes Cafe, which Aris Newton of Folly Road Foods, LLC opened following The Gibbes’ $13.4 million dollar remodel in 2016.
The Daily’s concept will offer “a curated menu of breakfast, lunch & snack options, updated interiors, and outdoor seating, among other planned updates.”
“The Butcher & Bee team is humbled and excited to bring The Daily to the Gibbes Museum,” says Shemtov. “As one of the oldest and most storied museums in the country, the Gibbes is an important cultural asset to Charleston. Our goal is to enhance the guest experience while also serving the wider community surrounding the museum.”
The Daily will be open to museumgoers and the general public. You can expect to see much of the same items the King Street Daily sells — toasts, soups, sandwiches, salads, mezze and grab & go items, in addition to pastries and ice cream treats from Butcher & Bee Pastry Chef and James Beard Award Nominee Cynthia Wong.
But perhaps the most exciting thing is the opportunity to dine in the museum’s huge backyard courtyard.
“We are thrilled to welcome The Daily at the Gibbes to the museum,” says Angela Mack, executive director of the Gibbes Museum of Art. “The Gibbes’ admission-free first floor seeks to engage the public by creating an accessible gathering space with artist studios, classrooms, the Lenhardt Garden, museum store and now the café. We look forward to attracting nearby lunchtime professionals, museumgoers and new visitors to the Gibbes.”
