The Lovell Sisters

If you’ve ever attended a Lovell Sisters show in Charleston before, their concert Saturday night may have seemed a little familiar. The Music Hall has become a favorite venue for the Georgia-based trio, they draw a loyal crowd, and many of the songs, including some of the covers, were recognizable from their concert during Piccolo Spoleto last year.
But a lot has changed since 2008. They’re now all officially legal adults, they’ve played the Grand Ole Opry, and they’ve placed in a couple of national song-writing contests. “Baby sister” Rebecca, now 18, seems to have taken the reins from Jessica in the vocals department, at least based on their last visit. Jessica, the oldest, sang on just a few songs, her strong voice lending power to their cover of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” in particular. Once again blonde-haired middle sister gave a tribute to Jerry Douglas with a skillful performance of “Choctaw Hayride.”
While some things were familiar about the show, it’s clear the girls — ahem, ladies — have made huge strides since their last trip to Charleston. But despite their growing successes, we still found them familiarly shmoozing with fans outside of Paolo’s Gelato after the show. Keep it real, sisters.
