As we go to press five days ahead of schedule in anticipation of a hurricane, part of me just wants to make this editor’s letter:

Dear Irma, Fuck off. Sincerely, Kinsey

But that’s not fair to this week’s feature story on Charleston Pride. This year, the LGBTQ organization is celebrating with not just the usual parade fanfare, but some top comedians and speakers from the community. And we need to hear their voices now more than ever. While incremental progress toward acceptance has been made, discrimination continues to fester, most obviously and incredibly, in our nation’s highest office. When President Trump issued his recent ban on transgender individuals in the U.S. military, he actually said, “I think I’m doing the military a great favor.” If you believe that’s the biggest crock of bullshit you’ve ever heard, then consider supporting Charleston Pride. As Thomas Jefferson said, “All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.” —Kinsey Gidick
