Last week, longtime Charleston musician Mike Thompson and his friends and bandmates were whoopin’ it up on the patio of Necter Bar & Grille in celebration of Thompson’s final week as the host of the popular open mic night at the Folly Road venue. It was a proper send-off for Thompson, who is moving to Nashville. “I’m a two-time reigning champ,” Thompson joked at one point. (He was voted “Best Male Vocalist” by City Paper readers in 2007 and 2008.) During a late-evening encore set, Thompson invited Necter staffer Evan Roach on stage to strum a few reggae and country tunes. During one song, the host rushed the stage, wrapped his arms around Roach, grabbed the neck of the acoustic guitar, and strummed through the chorus while the Necter employee sang lead. It was a classic move that garnered loud applause … and a few guffaws. —T. Ballard Lesemann
