Ida Becker is on vacation for the next few weeks, so CP staffers have jumped in to document some of the more interesting happenings of the week. Last weekend got started with an ambitious music festival — Holy City Pop! — spanning two nights at Cumberland’s and the Upper Deck Tavern on King Street. On Friday night, six bands played to an enthusiastic crowd of music lovers and scene supporters. Saturday night proved to be a madhouse, with the party starting at Upper Deck and moving over to Cumberland’s for sold-out sets from the likes of The Explorers Club and Cary Ann Hearst. Over on Daniel Island, the Charleston Battery helped the Houston Dynamo clinch the Carolina Cup by tying DC United 1-1. A reported 4,000 fans cheered the Battery on against the major league DC team, although United player and soccer superstar Freddy Adu had lots of crowd support despite being on the opposing team. The Gourmutt Dogbowl took over the Visitor’s Center bus shed on Sunday afternoon, and all kinds of bitches came out for the novel event, which featured gourmet food from area restaurants for the pooches and their people. The event raised money for the Rescue Resource Foundation, which helps support collaborative efforts among local rescue groups.
