On Tuesday, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra joined forces with The Have Nots! improv comedy troupe to produce a rollicking fusion of comedy and live music at the Sottile Theatre. Judging by the enthusiastic applause at the end of the masterfully executed performance, this sort of “out of the box” collaboration is poised to become the toast of the town. On Saturday, a different sort of audience filled the Gaillard Auditorium for the CSO’s sixth annual concert with the Gospel Choir led by Vivian Jones. The concert received a thundering five-minute standing ovation. Prior to the performance, I indulged in several bowls of steaming chili at the Maritime Center, where dozens of local celebrities demonstrated their culinary prowess at a lively event hosted by the John Ancrum Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Fire Chief Rusty Thomas talked a big game, but it was Tanya Brown, morning DJ at 95SX, who ultimately prevailed as chili champion. Everything culminated Sunday afternoon with the colorful extravaganza known as the downtown Christmas parade. Happy holidays!
