Some locals may assume that John Brennan’s This Is Chucktown! is a spin-off of the popular Theatre 99 sketch show History of Charleston for Morons. But it’s actually something entirely new (and still taking shape, even now).
“It’s an extension of John’s desire to do more of a sketch comedy show,” says Greg Tavares, co-founder of the Comedy Festival. “Sketch comedy is really getting hot these days. There’s a resurgence in the comedy world.”
This Is Chucktown! puts some of the finest local comics on stage. A special appearance from local group Foxhole Feng Shui (pictured) is a major part of the show, alongside a loose sketch nicknamed Holy Flocking Sheep.
“It started off as a variety show of music, comedy, and sketch, but it evolved into a collection of sketch comedy by local comedians, many of whom work at Theatre 99,” says Brennan. “Foxhole Feng Shui is a sketch group that has done shows, while the group with Holy Flocking Sheep is working on their first stuff … and the group is always changing.”
