Earlier today, I criticized gubernatorial candidate and Camden Democrat Vincent Sheheen for his decidedly milquetoast comment on the recent 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling — he’s waiting to see which way the judicial wind blows before offering an opinion. But minutes ago, I received an email from his fellow competitor in the 2014 gubernatorial race, Independent Republican Tom Ervin. And surprisingly Ervin does what Nikki Haley and Sheheen refuse to do: He welcomes the gay marriage ruling. Ervin writes:
Government does not belong in the bedroom. My personal faith affirms that marriage is between a man and a woman but under our Constitution, people in this country are afforded equal protection under our laws.
This means that anyone should be free to marry the person they love. Government should not be in the bedroom, but it should also not be in the church. Individual churches should be allowed to decide which marriage ceremonies they want to perform.
Further action on this matter, such as an appeal by the state, is a waste of taxpayer dollars.
I don’t know about you, but I know who’s got my vote in November.
