We told you there’s a mezcal trend going on and this latest news from Bittermilk’s Joe and MariElena Raya only confirms it. The handcrafted-cocktail-mixing couple (and owners of The Gin Joint) have released a mixer made especially for the maguey plant spirit: Oaxacan Old Fashioned.

“There is an old saying among the Oaxacan people: Para todo mal, mezcal, para todo bien, también, which means: For everything bad, mezcal; for everything good, too,” says owner Joe Raya in a press release today. We suppose his Oaxacan Old Fashioned is a response to that aphorism.

The new concoction is made from “dried Mexican chilies, cocoa nibs, and spices, sweetened with raisins and aged with cocoa husks,” and best mixed with mezcal. This latest Old Fashioned is the third to be released by the company and, just in time for the holidays, Bittermilk is offering an Old Fashioned gift set that features all three of the lines in a stamped box for $45.

To launch this latest product — which joins Bittermilk’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Old Fashioned, Tom Collins with Elderflower and Hops, Smoked Honey Whiskey Sour (our personal fave and bar must-have), New Orleans Style Old Fashioned Rouge, and Charred Grapefruit Tonic — the brand will be serving up samples at Minero Tues. Nov. 18 starting at 5 p.m. Minero has 23 mezcals available and will be mixing up drinks with Vida. However, we’re told if you’d like to taste test Oaxacan Old Fashioned with one of their other mezcal options, you can.

According to the press release, Minero will be the first local bar to serve the new line and will feature drinks on the menu. The first dozen guests that order a drink at Minero will receive a special giveaway.
