October must have snuck on some people. We got a lot of late-breaking foodie events that didn’t make it into today’s print edition, including a Slow Food picnic and pie auction, a sausage-heavy Oktoberfest throwdown, and a cookie shop grand opening party.

On Friday and Saturday, Closed for Business will be throwing up a tent on the corner of King and Radcliffe streets (empty lot next to the bar) for an Oktoberfest festival. Tables will be overflowing with beer and sausages from some of Chucktown’s hottest local chefs — Jason Houser, Mike Lata, Kevin Johnson, Sean Brock, and Jeremiah Bacon — while the Hans Schmidt German Band pumps out some oompah loompah music. Liederhosen should not be optional, but they are.

If you’ve got more of a sweet tooth than a meat tooth, head to Mt. Pleasant on Saturday morning for the grand opening of yesUmay, a new cookie boutique from Ashley Snider. The party will be from 4-7 p.m. at 280 W. Coleman Blvd. and we imagine there will be plenty of cookies on hand.

The Slow Food contingent will be heading to Joseph Fields Farm on Sunday for their annual potluck picnic. Bring a dish to share, pack your own beverages and picnic supplies, and bake a pie for the American Pie auction, which will raise money for Slow Food Charleston’s school nutrition projects.

And speaking of pie, the 3.14 Pies crew will be teaming up with Bin 152 for Fall Flights of Fancy, a pie and wine tasting on Tuesday night from 6-8 p.m. It costs $20 to get in and you’ll get a taste of the fall pie line-up: The Cran-peary Crumb, The Nutell Of A Pie, and the Maple Pumpkin Mascarpone paired with a sparkling wine.

Now if only sweater weather would arrive so we could eat with impunity.
