Members of the Royal Missionary Baptist Church choir are led by guest director J.D. Steele during a rehearsal for Gospel at Colonus. The show is a re-imagining of Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus, using gospel music to modernize the classic Greek tragedy. The Royal choir was chosen out of 8 local groups to be the Greek chorus in the performance.

Steele has performed Gospel at Colonus many times, including a Broadway production in the ’80s with Morgan Freeman. He has also recorded, toured and produced with artists that include Prince, George Clinton, Donald Fagan, Fine Young Cannibals, Kim Carnes and many others.
