A Woolfe Street house caught on fire Sunday afternoon, and while the residents escaped without injury, a dog perished after being trapped inside.
The Charleston Fire Department received a call about a blaze in the wood-framed house at 3 Woolfe St. around 3:10 p.m. According to public information officer Mark Ruppel, “heavy fire” was coming from the first- and second-story apartments when firefighters arrived. The fire department was able to contain the fire and keep it from spreading to nearby buildings, but a dog in the first-floor apartment did not get out.
The fire was under control in about 40 minutes, and the house is currently uninhabitable. Ruppel says the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the fire department has no reason to suspect that arson was involved.
