They haven’t headlined the big local music clubs or made the news for any sort of decadent rock ‘n’ roll behavior, but the East Cooper-based musicians in the Wando High School Marching Band certainly deserve praise in all the local music pages.

After a season of local and regional competitions, the full-scale band — led by director Scott Rush — made its way to the finals in the Bands of America Grand National Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., last week, performing in the Lucas Oil Stadium in front of 30,000 people.

Only one other S.C. marching band had ever achieved such a feat. Earlier this fall, the band won its fifth state title in the S.C. State 5A Championship Competition and its division at the Super Regionals in Atlanta.
