Here at the City Paper, we’re working through Martin Luther King Day, but we’re not bitter. Really. We’re happy for all of you looking forward to a three-day weekend, and we hope you take full advantage of it by checking out some of these promising events.
Let’s not forget the reason for the season. There are a handful of events honoring Dr. King, including a concert with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Spiritual Ensemble at Royal Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday. The Tri-County Tribute at Morris Street Baptist Church Sunday features keynote speaker Rev. Leonard O. Griffin, and Harvey Gantt Triumph Award recipient Bud Ferillo will appear as well. The Voices of Deliverance vocal ensemble will perform. The CSO is giving their own tribute on Monday with a concert featuring the orchestra, the CSO Gospel Choir, and the CSO Chorus.
Other note-worthy concerts include the Night of Music and Fun at the Music Hall on Friday. Local professionals can get in for half-price just by mentioning their company, and student tickets are now only $5. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band are playing the Pour House on Saturday, and for the more classically-inclined, CSO’s Yuriy concert is the same day.
You may have noticed we’re a little bit excited about the Charleston Comedy Festival, which kicks off next week. There are two more preliminary rounds of the Stand Up Competition on Friday and Saturday nights at Theatre 99. Order your $5 tickets in advance, because they will sell out.
Park Circle is keeping busy this weekend with the Riverfront Race Festival on Saturday, beginning at the Old Navy Base. Even if you’re not running, check it out for live music, and be a part of an attempt to set a world record for eating shrimp & grits. Later that evening, the Park Circle Film Society hosts an Indie Grits Fest featuring nine short films.
W.O.K. hosts a free organic wine tasting on Friday from 5-7 p.m. Then on Saturday, the Fat Hen hosts a Family Lowcountry Lunch, a chef and author presentation on teaching children about food and flavor.
Oyster lovers, as per usual this time of year, you’ve got some choices if you’ve got the urge to shuck. Sewee hosts Music and Oysters for Wildlife on Saturday with music from The Blue Dogs, Mark Bryan & Occasional Milkshake, Doug Jones and Cravin’ Melon, Triple Lindy, and the Whisperjets. The same day, the Shucking with Pride Oyster Roast is a fundraiser for Charleston Pride on Boidgen Road on Johns Island. On Sunday, the Riverland Terrace Garden Club hosts their Oyster Roast with proceeds go to support the local, district, and national projects of the Garden Club.
We’ll wrap it up with the most random event of the weekend: the Snuggie Pub Crawl. It kicks off at Wild Wing at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, and proceeds go toward MUSC Children’s Hospital.
