Weekend Roundup: Hotter than Drake's dance moves

Halloween weekend is just around the corner, but it’s safe to start pulling out your costumes a little early. Check out some of the Halloween-themed events going on this weekend like the Howl-o-Ween pet costume contest or Dock Street Theatre’s presentation of Sleepy Hollow. If you’re not quite ready to celebrate yet (or you’re still frantically assembling a costume) not to worry, there’s plenty of other events going on like visual art openings and the Follypalooza Benefit.

Friday

The College of Charleston Orchestra will perform Luck Be A Lady at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall at the Simons Center for the Arts.

Check out the Battery Theatre Company at the Battery Gadsen on Sullivan’s Island as they perform Shakespeare by the Sea at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The Yoga House of Charleston will host their Fourth Fridays event from 6-8 p.m. with yoga instruction followed by craft beer, wine, or a potluck dinner.

Parents, treat yourselves to a night out from 6-8:45 p.m. while the kids learn to paint a spooky cat or owl painting at the Hazel Parker Playground.

Nonprofit organization HeART will host a “Going Ghostbusters” and Edgar Allen Poe Halloween art show from 6-7 p.m. at St. Barnabas Lutheran Church.

Head to the Old Exchange Building to join in on a scavenger hunt and hear historical tales of Charleston from 6-8 p.m.

The Halsey Institute will host a double artist opening reception from 6:30-8 p.m. for Susan Klein and Jiha Moon’s exhibits Shadow Things and Most Everyone’s Mad Here.

Get out your creepiest costume for the Royal American’s Zombie Prom at 9 p.m. featuring the Misfits tribute band Death Comes Ripping.

Saturday

Fraser Elementary (currently closed) will welcome a new visual art exhibit on its fence, by Jack Alterman titled East Siders Matter.

Support a good cause and check out the 8th Annual Follypalooza Cancer Benefit on Center Street from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Riverfront Park will host Be More Tea, a free outdoor concert from 1:30-10 p.m. with St. Lucia, Walk the Moon, The Roots, and Passion Pit. Props if you can figure out how to get tickets.

The best cook-off of the season is here — the Mac Off. Head to the Grove at Patriots Point from 2-7 p.m. for music and samples of the best mac and cheese in Charleston.

Take advantage of the unique opportunity to walk through Jiha Moon’s newest exhibit with the artist herself at 2 p.m. at the Halsey Institute.

North Charleston Performing Arts Center will put on an interesting performance of Dracula: Ballet with a Bite from 7:30-10 p.m.

To kickoff the Eastside Community Spirit Week there will be a Stop the Violence Day march/rally beginning at Mall Park from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Witness a Halloween classic performance of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow at the Dock Street Theatre from 3-4:30 p.m.

Sunday

The Hanahan Amphitheater will host this year’s Lowcountry Hall of Fame Awards at 1:30 p.m. featuring jazz and blues artists.

The Charleston Museum welcomes guests to their annual family picnic at the Dill Sanctuary from 1-4 p.m. with picnic style food, beer and wine, and birds of prey demonstrations.

Head over to Brittlebank Park from 3-9 p.m. for the Thanks Joe! event and get the chance to take a picture with Mayor Joe Riley and thank him for his dedication to Charleston.

The Barrel will host a Howl-o-Ween benefit from 12-4 p.m. for the Special Olympics. Come dressed in costume and dress your pets up too.

Celebrate Revelry Brewing’s One Year Anniversary with their block party style ‘Sausagefest’ from 12-6 p.m.
