After all those late-night cocktail parties and midnight cheeseburgers during Spoleto, we needed to get our rears in shape. Enter lululemon athletica on King Street. Because working out isn’t just about looking cute at the gym, the new retail store hosted a Yoga on King event to celebrate their opening. Though we wouldn’t know the downward-facing dog position from a game of Twister, instructor Mark Knowles kept an encouraging, upbeat tone for all the participants and made it easy for the novices.
The usually busy street was blocked off between Society and Wentworth streets and was absolutely packed with colorful yoga mats and in-synch stretchers. The event hosts boasted that they expected to draw in over 500 participants, and while we didn’t count every mat, the outcome was impressive. The beautiful weather and unusual spectacle caused many onlookers to stop and admire the taut bodies and fluid movements of yogis.
The amazing temperatures and sunshine continued into the next day to bless all local outdoor events. Two days of celebrating Caribbean American Heritage Month ended on Saturday with the Charleston Carifest Caribbean Carnival at Brittlebank Park. Many families and groups of friends set up tents and picnics on the lawn of the park to take advantage of the day-long outdoor party. Dancers entertained the crowd with elaborate carnival costumes: feather headdresses, boas, masks, and elaborate sequined outfits. Fatigued from trying our hand at belly-dancing, we were able to refuel at one of the many food tents set up with Caribbean fare. Jamaica Me Hungry’s jerk chicken was one of our favorite plates that afternoon, and we were washed it down with a Red Stripe from the beer tent.
On the other end of the event spectrum, the Cocktail Club hosted a Mad Men Season Five wrap party on the other side of downtown. The send-off celebration was the creation of Deirdre Zahl of Candy Shop Vintage and Jess James of The Style Girl Collection. Tables of vintage jewels and racks of frocks were set up for attendees, but many participants were busy checking out what everyone else was wearing. Girls snapped pictures of one another in their white gloves, wiggle-dresses, and bouffants. Men in slim suits gathered drinks from the bar; the Silver Fox, a gin-based concoction, was the signature cocktail for the evening.
Lindsay Evans was named best dressed for the evening in her floral dress, complete with tulle crinoline and cat-eye glasses. She took home the prize of an earring and brooch set worn by the Joan Holloway on Mad Men.
