Guided in beery/boozy fashion by aging co-hosts Amy Hutto and Toker, 98X’s “Local X” crew and local agency Knight Booking present a free showcase of local hard-rock and metal this Saturday. Amy and Toker’s birthdays are in November, so they secured an open date at one of their favorite haunts and assembled four of their favorite local metal/rock bands — Broadside, Near Fatal Fall, Moonless Moth, and Blindsyght (pictured). They’re getting old … but staying immature.
Overstood, Sat. Nov. 24 at The Windjammer ($5)
For more than two years, local combo Overstood have been tinkering with their funky, reggae-tinged rock style — shifting from straightforward, four-chord pop rock stuff to more progressive, rhythmically complex material. Guitarist Charlie Thompson (formerly of Flyin’ Blind, The Parrots) and his two sons, singer and rhythm guitarist Cortie Thompson, and bassist/vocalist Matty Thompson, recently solidified the band lineup with the addition of percussionist Jamie London and drum kit wiz-kid Evan Bivins (ex- Jump, Little Children).
Kev Rowe, Sat. Nov. 24 at 11 Center Street (Free)
Originally from Jamestown, N.Y. (way up there, near Buffalo), acoustic singer/guitarist Kev Rowe currently resides in Charleston and specializes in a smooth blend of blues, rock, and folk. Last Saturday, he kicked off an “acoustic concert series” at 11 Center Street on Folly Beach, and follows up this week with a set at 7 p.m. Expect a lot of material off his latest album, Into the Gold — a 13-song collection of ballads, pop tunes, and groovers showcasing Rowe’s serene vocal style and gently wandering guitar lines.
