This weekend is the third running of the Charleston Marathon, and we all know what that means: watching people in way better shape than we are run on by as we sit in endless traffic jams. But this time, only six miles of the route are on the peninsula, so downtown is expected to be mostly traffic-snarl-free.

Starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, East Bay Street, Murray Boulevard, and King Street all the way to the King Street extension will be closed until 9:30 a.m. (at the latest), as race participants travel the route that begins on East Bay and continues down to the Battery. Then they’ll head up King Street, ending up in North Charleston more than 26 miles later. We’re tired just thinking about it.

If you live in North Charleston, or plan to be there on Saturday, expect some traffic delays since the majority of the race will occur there. These roads will be affected by rolling closures from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.: Meeting Street Road, Viaduct Road, Hobson Boulevard, Bainbridge Avenue, Noisette Boulevard, St. John’s Road, Buist Avenue, Park Circle, Durant Avenue, Mixson Avenue, Lackawanna Avenue., East Montague Avenue, Virginia Avenue, and Jenkins Avenue. To help you make a traveling strategy, a detailed race map is available online.

And if you do find yourself stuck, and the road rage is building, just remember that it’s all for a good cause: proceeds from the race go toward developing fine arts programs in Charleston schools.
