Where to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Charleston 2019

Ah, Cinco de Mayo, the commemoration of the 1863 Battle of Puebla. We all know it, right? The battle, in which the Mexican Army fought off the French, was used by activists in the 1950s to educate Mexican Americans about their heritage. (More on that, and how to celebrate Cinco appropriately, here.)

All weekend

Zia Taqueria will be celebrating all weekend with Zia ritas, tequila a bunch of different ways, and their tasty Mexican food.

Maui Tacos will be celebrating all weekend with food and drink specials.

Tattooed Senorita will have food and drink specials and live music from 6 to 9 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

FortyEight Wine Bar will have special drinks and food, including margaritas, Lo-Fi beer, and more.

Top Dawg Tavern in Summerville will have $4 Coronas, $5 margaritas, and $8 carafes.

The Mount Pleasant and Sullivan’s Island Mex 1 locations will have food and drink specials and live music all weekend (more deets below).

Los Reyes in West Ashley and North Charleston celebrates all weekend with food and drink specials.

Red’s will have special Mexican fare and drink specials ($3 Corona Premier and Modelo, $5 Red Margarita) Sat. and Sun. for a dock rockin’ fiesta.

Sat. May 4

The Charleston Animal Society is hosting the 14th Annual Charleston Cinco de Mayo Festival from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Charleston Visitors Center Bush Shed, featuring live music–including merengue, salsa, and bachata–authentic food, drinks, and dance exhibitions. Tickets start at $15.

Enjoy authentic Mexican food and a good deal at El PinchoTaco, where they will have a DJ and food and drink specials.

Westbrook is hosting Quatro de Cake-O, a festive release party for their limited time Mexican Cake Imperial stout. Minero will be on site to sling tacos and chips, guac, and queso.

West Ashley’s Mex 1 is hosting their seventh annual Cinco de Mex1 block party from 3 p.m., featuring performances, axe throwing, food and drink specials, and more. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.

Container Bar is hosting Cuatro de Mayo from 12 to 5 p.m. with proceeds going to the Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center and put on by the Charitable Society of Charleston. Tickets are $5.

Pre-game Cinco de Mayo Tex Mex style with a return of Juan Luis at Lewis Barbecue (and $4 margs!) They will also have the race on for all you Derby fans, too!

Sun. May 5

Taco Boy is celebrating all weekend, Weekendo de Cinco, with music from DJ Trevor D from 12 to 8 p.m. on Sun., May 5.

Do Work Media is hosting Cinco Sunday, a rap festival, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets are $5.

Celebrate Cinco at any Cantina 76 location with half-price original house margs, $5 cazadores, $2.50 Mexican bottled beer, and $4 sangria. There will also be live music and corn hole competitions

Have a three course dinner, cocktails, and a Don Julio tasting at the Macintosh to celebrate from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $95.

LG’s by the Creek is having a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, featuring $5 Patron, $3 margaritas, $1 tacos, and DJ Moo Moo from 3 to 7 p.m.

BYO-mat: Uptown Social is hosting a Cinco de Mayo barre class on their rooftop. Tickets start at $10 and include a drink.

Container Bar Charleston and Rutledge Cab Company are hosting a Cinco de Mayo block party starting at 11 a.m. and featuring live music, drinks, and food specials.

Uptown Social is having the questionably named “Taco Dirty to Me” party starting at 12 p.m. and featuring ten hours of entertainment, including from “The Strawberry Squad.”

Bay Street Biergarten is celebrating with tequila and food specials all day long.

If nothing screams “fighting off the French” like dancing, boy you are in luck with Trio’s Black Out Brunch. Enjoy an all inclusive brunch at 11 a.m., then upstairs there’s dancing until 5 p.m. It may be Sunday, but it’ll feel like a Saturday night (or, just earlier on Sunday morning.)

Kwei Fei serves Mexican eats all week but Sunday you can really throw down noon to 8 p.m.

Pink Cactus will launch their brunch service on Cinco de Mayo (they’re now open for lunch daily, too). They also have a patio in the works out front, so you can marg it up in the sun.

Make your way to both downtown and Mt. Pleasant’s Santi’s for drink and shot specials like house margaritas ($4), margarita pitchers ($18), shots of El Jimador Tequila ($4), and more. The downtown location will have a $12 buffet and a dance party with DJ Soto.
