May looks like it’s going to be the perfect month for anyone who’s ever been interested in filmmaking, as there are a wide variety of classes coming up in the next few weeks.

First up, the South Carolina Film Commission will host a free digital effects workshop at Trident Technical College on Sat. May 7. The teachers are Keith Adams (SPIN Studios in Atlanta) and David Johnson (Mad Monkey in Columbia), who’ve done work for Disney, Paramount Pictures, and more. They will talk about green screens, camera movement, mixing live action with animation, and other relevant topics. The workshop takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in building 920.

If you’ve got some free time later in the month, you might want to check out one of the classes hosted by the Charleston International Film Festival. A major part of the festival, besides all the films, is the workshops they offer throughout the week.

On Thurs. May 19, Michael Katchman from Reelclick Independent Films will lead “Providing Venues for Independent Films,” and the College of Charleston hosts a movie editing workshop, utilizing Final Cut Pro with professor Dave Brown. Fri. May 20 has Brown hosting another class, this time on animation. On Saturday, Nic Izzi will lead a 3-D workshop, followed by a Q&A; the day also features a panel on the S.C. Film Commission’s indie grants and using tax incentives.
