The National Fire Protection Association says that this is the deadliest fire for firefighters since 9/11. Here’s some other information they had from a recent report on firefighter fatalities.

• In 2006, a total of 89 on-duty firefighter deaths occurred in the United States

• Six multiple-fatality incidents occurred in 2006 – the two most severe killing nine wildland firefighters.

• Fire ground operations accounted for 43 percent of deaths

• Firefighters who died in 2006 ranged in age from 17 to 78, with a median age of 43 years.
