Spring Street Asian fusion restaurant Xiao Bao Biscuit will open a Nashville outpost in 2022, XBB owner Josh Walker told the City Paper Monday. The new restaurant will be located in East Nashville at 830 Meridian St., less than a block from Folk, which Walker referred to as “the FIG of Nashville.”

“It reminds me of Charleston a lot, only it’s a much bigger city,” said Walker, who also considered Austin for the next Xiao Bao Biscuit location. “We felt that East Nashville was a cool, funky vibe that reminded us of Spring Street 10 years ago. It just felt like a really interesting place to explore.”

Walker hopes to open the 2,200-square-foot Nashville location at the beginning of 2022, less than one year after Xiao Bao debuts in Charlotte food hall Optimist Hall. According to Eater Nashville, the new restaurant’s name will be shortened to Xiao Bao, like at Optimist Hall.

In Nashville, Xiao Bao will be located on the same street as forthcoming restaurant Audrey, the latest from Sean Brock, who built his career in Charleston before moving to Nashville in 2018, later relinquishing his role of “founding chef and culinary advisor” with the Neighborhood Dining Group in 2019. Redheaded Stranger, the Music City taco shop from the folks who brought you The Daily and Butcher and Bee, is also steps away.

Walker plans to move to Nashville “for the first year” but says he’ll eventually return to Charleston to oversee the original location on Spring Street along with Tu, his other Charleston-area restaurant.
