It’s no surprise that folks are calling for CFD chief Rusty Thomas to step down from his post. And it’s no be shock that Mayor Riley is standing by Thomas either; he backed former CPD head Reuben Greenberg even in the worst of times. Right now, Riley is a good friend and an important ally to the embattled fire chief.

But one has to wonder if ole Rusty will be able to say the same thing about fellow firefighter George Gardiner once folks start talking about what Gardiner said in today’s Post and Courier:

Charleston Fire Capt. George Gardiner, a 17-year veteran and a union member, disagreed. He said he is proud to serve under Thomas, and he and many other firefighters want the chief to stay.

Gardiner said he considers the expert panel’s recommendations to be overly cautious “Yankee stuff.” Thomas’ leadership and the department’s aggressive tactics helped save hundreds of lives and properties over the years, Gardiner said.

Wow. Yankee stuff? What is that exactly? A collection of A-Rod bobble-heads? A gift assortment of candles? A sex toy for men? With friends like these Rusty, who needs enemies?

You can get the panel’s recommendations here and decide for yourself if it is “Yankee stuff.”

Meanwhile, Gardiner’s comments are reportedly getting his firefighting brothers up North all fired up: click here.
