MORNING NEWSBREAK  |  Thousands of new college graduates received diplomas over the weekend in the first of two rounds of commencement ceremonies.

In Charleston, nearly 500 Citadel students got diplomas where they heard remarks from U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C.  In North Charleston, 2,400 students graduated at Trident Tech as did nearly 600 at Charleston Southern University.  

Thousands more will receive diplomas in the coming week.  On Friday and Saturday, College of Charleston seniors will graduate.   Students at the Charleston School of Law will graduate Saturday.  One week later on May 18, the Medical University of South Carolina will confer degrees at North Charleston Coliseum.

In Columbia over the weekend, some 8,600 students nabbed diplomas at the University of South Carolina while 300 received their sheepskins at Benedict College. 

And in Rock Hill, Parliament Funkadelic’s George Clinton appeared as a highlight of Clinton College ceremonies.  He received an honorary doctorate of humane letters at the historically Black institution co-founded by his great-great grandfather in 1894.

 “I am sure he would be proud I have been granted this honor,” the performer said.  “But he would be even prouder if I were among you who have completed your education and furthered the purpose of this institution.”

Gun violence: Reports of shots fired at N. Charleston basketball event.   Also over the weekend, two were shot at a North Charleston gas station. And shots were reported Saturday at the North Charleston High event.

Charleston school leaders oppose district split. Charleston school leaders say they oppose North Charleston splitting off from the district.

2024: Scott won’t commit to accepting 2024 election results. U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., refused Sunday to accept the 2024 election results as leading contenders essentially auditioned to be former President Donald Trump’s running mate over the weekend.

Clyburn, Pelosi, Kerry honored with Presidential Medal of Freedom. U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif, and former Secretary of State John Kerry were among 19 who received the medal Friday.
