A Modern History of the Satanic Panic

FILE

Dustin Waters takes a deep dive into the history of the Satanic Panic, the mass hysteria that gripped the country in the 70s and 80s. It all started in the 1890s when a woman named Diana Vaughan married the devil in the Holy City. This story has it all: fake devil worship, a rumored Satanic temple in the middle of downtown Charleston, police fears that the occult is taking root in South Carolina, and of course, a reaction from the head of the Church of Satan.

The podcast is available on iTunesSpotifyOvercast, and SoundCloud.

The Candlestick Murders

FILE

We examined the 1958 Candlestick Murder of Jack Dobbins, a gay man who’s killing would strike fear into Charleston’s gay community for years. The story, from Dustin Waters, provides context for violence against the LGBTQ community that still happens today.
