The Perch, an indoor/outdoor bar and cafe located inside of Get Carried Away Southern Market, is now open. Get Carried Away, owned by Brian and Sassy Henry, opened its first location in Pawleys Island in 2011. The second market, which is managed by their daughter Camille, is located in the building formerly occupied by Wild Wings and opened in January of this year. Now, in addition to grabbing pre-made meals, snacks, drinks and more, guests are invited to stay a while at The Perch.
The Henrys were used to getting positive feedback at the Pawleys’ market. “The Pawleys location has done so well and we felt like it had been a good 11 years,” said Brian. “So many people from other places would say ‘oh, please bring one to my hometown.’ It would do well anywhere. And we thought, well, it’s either now or never that we give it a whirl — so we decided to give it a whirl.”
The Perch serves lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with classic menu items like an Italian Club, smashburger, cobb salad and more. You can also just hang out on the patio at all hours, grab a drink from the bar and snacks from the market. The bar menu features your standard cocktails, from a margarita to a mule, as well as small bites like fries and confetti corn dip served from 3 to 6:30 p.m. daily.
Location, location, location
The Henrys chose Mount Pleasant as their store’s location because of its proximity to Pawleys and because so many Mount Pleasant families are familiar with the store from trips up North Hwy 17.
“There’s a little more space to spread out in Mount Pleasant and I do think that the demographic reflects that as far as young families,” said Brian.
Still, slightly tucked off of Coleman Blvd., the store hasn’t quite caught on with all the locals.
“We’ve had some customers that have come in recently and have said, ‘We had no idea you were here,’” said Camille. With expanding hours, though, The Perch is becoming more and more of a place for locals to hang out. “We don’t think we’ll be a late night place,” said Camille. “But we do feel like we would be the perfect early dinner or pre-game destination.”
The Henrys hope to add trivia nights to The Perch’s offerings, soon, as well as consistent live music nights. “We’re trying to add some things that are a little more interactive and fun for families to come participate and spend their early evenings there,” said Brian.
After over a decade in the business of helping customers “get carried away,” Brian has some experience figuring out what works, and what doesn’t, when it comes to running a business.
“I sometimes stand back and I watch as we operate and I think about other successful businesses, when you go in from a consumer standpoint, you don’t even think about it, you just go in there and you have an expectation that things are gonna run a certain [way],” said Brian. “I sometimes stand back and [ask], ‘Are we doing this right?’ And I feel like we are.”
