Best of Charleston comes around but once a year, and today, we’re ready to celebrate. We’ve all been through an awful lot these last two years. In 2021, we saw restaurants reopen, live music make its return, beloved venues come back to life and playhouses bringing shows to the stage. Now more than ever, we want to show some love to our favorite local people, places and businesses who managed to keep Charleston vibrant through all these trying times.
For this year’s issue, we changed things up a bit, adding new categories and bringing back our CP Picks, which highlight some features of Charleston we thought deserved their own kind of special recognition — whether the achievement is awesome, or dubious at best.

Attractions and City Living
With last year marking a (sort of) return to business-as-usual Charleston, many of the Holy City’s best events and attractions found themselves reignited and reinvigorated. With farmers markets ditching pandemic-era restrictions, local groups bringing back their top events and the hospitality sector seeing tourists flock back to Charleston’s historic downtown, beaches and tour services, we’re glad to see this section back in business — but we could, of course, do without the parking and traffic woes some of these winners bring. The arts are back in full force in Charleston! The last 12 months have seen the performing arts return and visual artists thrive, and the city is alive again with culture. Charleston musicians and music lovers are getting back on the live music grind we sorely missed in 2021, while the local music industry has been bursting at the seams with events and performances that had been on hold for too long. The iconic Pour House on James Island is back to music seven nights a week, downtown karaoke club Bangkok Lounge has its customary line out the door again and Music Farm is reborn. King Street isn’t the only place to grab a drink in the Lowcountry. If you’re into the outdoors — particularly watery pursuits — it’s a simple fact that few cities in the United States offer as much as Charleston. We may not have many hills, but if you have access to a paddleboard, kayak, sailboat or powerboat, you have basically doubled or even tripled the size of the city you inhabit — and infinitely expanded your opportunities to get out into nature.
Thanks to the relentless work of organizations like The Lowcountry Land Trust, The Nature Conservancy, Ducks Unlimited and the Coastal Conservation League, no city along the East Coast can boast more nearby protected islands, forests and beaches. If you’re willing to head a few miles out of town, you’ll find an endless array of places to hike, bike (even mountain bike), hunt and fish. Just bring some bug spray.
