Proving that people use Sur-Gel for a purpose other than passing drug tests, the Culinary Institute of Charleston will host a two-part “Food Preservation Boot Camp.” Dr. Libby Hoyle, former professor and extension specialist at Clemson’s Dept. of Packaging Science, will teach participants how to pick fruits and vegetables at their peak, then put them into a jar for the Lowcountry’s cold and dreary winters. Sanitation and safety will be taught, as well as lab work on jam and jelly creation, canning, and other preservation methods. A copy of the book So Easy to Preserve comes with the class. Charleston Farmers Market

After four months of forced consumption of canned produce, the Farmers Market returns to Marion Square this Sat. and continues weekly until next winter. The farms dotting Charleston’s suburbs will offer fresh produce, plants, flowers, and herbs as they harvest. There’s also the usual sidewalk vendors offering delicious brunch items from Belgian waffles to crepes and paninis.
