A few Charleston locals have entered the Your OWN Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star contest (check it out here). The competition series allows participants to upload a video pitching their idea for a talk show. The TV show will premiere on the new Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) in 2011. Joy Vandervort-Cobb, a theater professor at the College of Charleston, has an entry called Authentic Joy, a “show about talking with real people who have been through some tough challenges and have found wisdom and joy as a result. We’ll share laughs, tears, and genuine joy together.” Dr. Renee Tocco, from North Charleston, has proposed a show about childhood illnesses. And former television host Ryan Nelson’s pitch “will spotlight the ordinary people throughout the United States that make our country extraordinary.” You can vote for these entries at the website through July 3. The contest is no longer accepting submissions. The winner will have their show produced for OWN.
