Dragon Boating was originally a Chinese sport, where 20 paddlers would row in a magnificent 41-foot boats to the beat of the "dragon’s heart" (a drummer). Two thousand years later, the sport has become hugely popular among cancer survivors. Dragon Boat Charleston is South Carolina’s first cancer survivor team, and they will host their fourth Dragon Boat Festival at Brittlebank Park this Saturday.

In the day-long competition, teams (made up of co-workers, families, and friends) will race 250-meter lengths. The event raises money to sponsor the cancer survivors who participate in Dragon Boat Charleston; with the funds raised, it ensures that they don’t have to pay any of the usual participation costs.

One team you’ll see stroking on the Ashley: the Charleston Battery. Keep an eye out for them, and see if their arms are as good as their legs.
