Women’s tennis had one of its finest moments Saturday when Serena Williams played one of the best matches of her entire career against Aussie Sam Stosur in the Family Circle Cup semifinals. Serena and Sam are both previous FCC champions and they’re two of the strongest, fittest, and most successful athletes this game has ever seen.
The sun was shining down as Serena won every single point in the first two games of their first set. The stadium was packed and fans were held in rapt attention as Serena played flat-out flawless tennis, hitting seven aces during the match and a slew of jaw-dropping winners that hit the lines perfectly, keeping Stosur off-balance and unable to keep up.
This was a rare grunt-less match and the stadium was particularly quiet as fans witnessed an almost miraculous two sets of tennis. The sad part was that it also felt like a slaying of Stosur, who is well-loved by Charleston fans and revered for her unique style of play, which features a powerful kick serve and a notorious spin on her groundstrokes. As much as everybody loves watching Serena, there was a strong pull for Sam, especially because she played five hard sets of tennis the day before compared to Serena’s five scant games.
Serena had a stunning 6-1 6-1 victory and did a pirouette on court to show her delight. She will be playing in the finals Sunday at 1 p.m. against Lucie Safarova. May the odds ever be in your favor Lucie, but there is no beating this Serena. Safarova will however have a chance at victory when she plays in the doubles final later in the afternoon. She and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will play Anabel Medina Garrigues and Yaroslava Shvedova after “suitable rest.”
