Summertime and the living is easy — unless, of course, you’re one of the 13 theater students that make up the Midtown Youth Musical Theatre Ensemble. Those kids, ages eight-17, have spent the last three weeks perfecting musical numbers from classic Broadway shows, and the audition-only camp will culminate with a showcase, aptly named Showstoppers: An Original Musical Revue of Broadway Favorites. Each number is professionally produced, choreographed, and costumed, and includes selections from Gypsy, Hamilton, Cabaret, and Newsies, just to name a few.

Showstoppers isn’t just a showcase of the musical talent these kids have to offer though. It also serves as a fundraiser for the program’s scholarship fund, which celebrates its 10th year of providing aid to theater students in need.

Since 2007, Midtown Productions has been able to distribute over 100 scholarships to students hoping to participate in their education program. The fund is supplemented by patron donations as well as grants from the Arts Alliance of Charleston, but the showcase allows the program the opportunity to grant more students a chance to participate.

Opening night is July 28 and the show runs through August 6; for more information, and to get your hands on some tickets, head over to midtownproductions.org.
