Charleston Restaurant Week is set to begin today, offering diners a myriad of great options for dining around the Lowcountry at special prices. Area chefs have the opportunity to showcase their most popular dishes during the annual event, while giving people the affordable chance to enjoy restaurants they may not often visit.

More than 50 restaurants in Mount Pleasant, Isle of Palms, downtown Charleston, West Ashley, Daniel Island, Johns Island, North Charleston and Summerville are signed on for the event, offering multi-course meals for a discounted price.

La Patisserie in Hotel Bennett in downtown Charleston is hosting a familiar contest, as one of the 400 handmade chocolate bars for sale at the pastry shop contains a golden ticket to win free desserts from La Patisserie for a lifetime.

2 well-known Charleston-area restaurants to close. Mount Pleasant’s Vietnamese restaurant Little Miss Ha announced its closure at the end of October, while downtown’s Butcher & Bee permanently closed its doors Sept. 3.

S.C. Supreme Court says circuit judge shouldn’t have released killer. A Columbia circuit court judge who last year granted early release to a convicted killer did not have the authority to reduce the killer’s sentence, according to a new S.C. Supreme Court opinion. Why? Because the killer, who now will spend the rest of his 35-year term in jail, didn’t meet requirements from applicable statutes, the opinion said.

​​Abortions rose in most U.S. states, new study shows. In eight states, including South Carolina, the estimated number of abortions increased by 60% or more as patients crossed state lines seeking care.

Hurricane Lee intensifies as it heads toward Caribbean. Hurricane Lee is expected to rapidly intensify in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday and will likely become a major storm by early Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center. It’s headed toward the East Coast, but is expected to veer north soon.

Narcan to become available at major stores in the Lowcountry. The overdose reversal drug Narcan will be available without a prescription beginning this week at stores such as Walgreens, CVS and Target.

Judge to decide fate of Calhoun statue removed from Charleston park. The future of Charleston’s John C. Calhoun monument, formerly at Marion Square, is now in the hands of a state circuit court judge after both sides in the fight presented their arguments for more than an hour.

Charleston mayoral forum postponed after female candidates excluded. A forum to allow voters to hear from the city of Charleston’s mayoral candidates on Tuesday was postponed after one candidate said she and the other woman running for the seat were excluded from the event.
