It always happens. A rash of restaurant closings after the slow month of January.
Cesca has been selling their wine bottles at a deep discount for at least a week, an indication that they were liquidating their inventory. And sure enough, this weekend will be their last. We can’t say we’re surprised. While the restaurant was nice, it just felt kind of generic, like something you’d find in any northeastern city.
Another non-surprise is 17 North shutting its doors. There’ve been rumblings it would happen since Brannon Florie left to pursue his own restaurant a few months ago. The biggest shock is that they’ve held on this long.
According to Warren Wise in the P&C today, Bubba Slye’s is being replaced by Black Bean Co., which will close its Spring Street location. I remember back in the day when Bubba Slye’s was located on Beaufain in a tiny little un-airconditioned dump, which has been fabulously transformed into the current space of Black Tap Coffee. Once upon a time, Bubba Slye’s was my favorite sandwich place. But I can’t say I followed them to King Street. (I would link to Wise’s column, but the paper’s site was down). Regardless, they were a longtime downtown business and we’re sorry to see them close.
Over in Mt. Pleasant, Abe’s Oyster House has shut the doors and a new owner is coming in to revamp the space with a new concept. More news on that as we get it.
