Tamlyn Willard of West Ashley’s Sublime Pies and Cakes is officially the prizewinning priestess of pie. Willard, who opened her bake shop just a little less than a year ago, recently won two first place ribbons at the National Pie Championship. This was Willard’s first national event, and her pies represented the youngest company in the competition’s commercial division. The exposure Willard has received as a result of the win has put Sublime’s commercial pie production in overdrive. You can pick up your own prizewinning Key lime pie and Key lime cheesecake, as well as other sweets, at Sublime’s retail location in the Avondale shopping center and at the downtown Charleston Farmers’ Market every Saturday. Doc Green’s, a gourmet salad restaurant and sister franchise of Mama Fu’s and Moe’s Southwestern Grill, is opening a new location in Mt. Pleasant at Towne Centre Place. The lunch spot, whose slogan is “healthy as you wanna be,” will offer salads, soups, flat bread sandwiches, and entrées that include your choice of meat and one or two sides. It’s a good thing the company slogan isn’t “as healthy as you can be,” because these salads aren’t exactly what the doctor ordered. Cheese, bacon, candied fruits, and a variety of cream-based dressings are included on all of the “Doc’s Signature Salads.” The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine recently conducted a study to assess how healthy these kinds of salads really are. McDonald’s Crispy Chicken Bacon Ranch Salad (similar to Doc Green’s Dr. Rosen Rosen Salad) was found to have more fat and calories, and just as much cholesterol, as a Big Mac. —EL

Ye Olde Fashioned Ice Cream is opening a new location in the old Sharky’s at 337 King St. Upgrade or downgrade? Certainly an upgrade for hot summer month tourists and families in search of sugary appeasement for cranky kids. It’s a downgrade for the local college crowd. While the pizza won’t be missed, Sharky’s was a great place to get a cheap beer and hang out with friends, something that definitely won’t be happening at Ye Olde. Owner Todd Lapin also owns the two YOFIC Summerville locations. As a kid growing up West of the Ashley, he always dreamed of owning a restaurant downtown. Lapin is putting major, and much needed, elbow grease into renovating the old pizza joint. You will be able to judge his efforts for yourself when the downtown YOFIC opens at the end of August. —EL
