MINGO MADNESS
Longtime popular groove/rock quartet Uncle Mingo first started gigging around Charleston in 1989 when guitarist/vocalist Scott Quattlebaum, bassist/vocalist Bryan “Mo” Moore on vocals and bass, drummer Robert Thorn, and keyboardist/saxophonist Jason Moore put together a solid set of vintage funk and original tunes … and a wardrobe of wild outfits. The band basically split up in 1998 but came back together in various forms for special performances. They headline a special show at the Pour House on Fri. June 16 with support from Live Oak and again at Party at the Point at the Harbor Resort at Patriots Point at 6 p.m. on Fri. June 30. BLUES AND GRASS
St. Johns Island Cafe, that rustic greasy spoon and music cafe located at 3140 Maybank Hwy. on Johns Island, has had great success with the weekly bluegrass series on Thursday evenings (8-11 p.m.). Now, they’ve added a new weekend house band to the summer calendar. Local blues-rock quartet Isness are set to play every Saturday night from 9 to midnight at the venue. Call 559-9090 for more info.
VENUES: CHANGES
Two weeks back, a new venue in Summerville announced their live music and karaoke schedule … well, it’s a newly-named venue in a familiar spot. Hurricane Alley, located at 1761 N. Main St., just east of downtown Summerville, is a spacious roadside tavern with games, pool, numerous TVs, and a sizeable live music room. According the general manager Glen Jeansonne, the club plans to hold weekly karaoke nights on Mondays and Thursdays, and live bands at least three nights a week (see Music Board for listings). Northside rock faves Big Black Building are set to play every Wednesday night through the summer. Call the club at 873-9220 for more info. —TBL
