You’d be hard-pressed to find two things Charlestonians love more than art and food. So the Charleston Fine Art Dealers’ Association and its first-ever Palette/Palate Benefit has the makings for another tradition we’ll be keen to hold on to. Patrons can buy tickets at any of the 14 member galleries or by calling CFADA’s reservation hotline, and the ticket works for entrance to all participating galleries, including Ann Long Fine Art, Coleman Fine Art, Margaret Petterson Gallery, and 11 others, as well as a pass for fine cuisine prepared by chefs from Boathouse Restaurant, Carolina’s, Charleston Grill, and many more. The event is part of CFADA’s Studio Series, which benefits its visual arts scholarship. Joe Sylvan, president of the CFADA, says the event “presents a perfect blend of Charleston’s art and culinary worlds.” Worlds that collide rarely offer such culture — and all against the backdrop of historic Charleston.

What better way to pass the time during the lazy days of summer than with a little fishing? The Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission hosts fishing tournaments off the Folly Beach pier every month throughout the summer. It doesn’t matter if you’re a master fisherman or just a master of watching fishing on television, anyone is welcome to compete — anyone who is willing to wake up really early on a Saturday morning, that is. The tournament is fun for the whole family and even kids can participate. Just try not to get too upset if your kids catch a bigger fish than you do.

It might have been the best of times and the worst of times, but why focus on the negative? The Alliance Francaise wants to honor the glory of the other red, white, and blue in the Lowcountry: France’s Bastille Day, or Fete Nacionale for those of you that think accents are hot. It’s been more than 200 years since the French stormed the Bastille and the French Republic was born, but that doesn’t mean the enthusiasm has cooled. Enjoy live music, games of Boules with prizes (think English lawn bowling or Italian bocce) and French fare as the Tour de France plays on a large-screen TV. With any luck — and a whole lotta pastries — this afternoon is sure to offer a much better ending than A Tale of Two Cities.

Bask in the light of simple American beauty, as portrayed in a rural setting. Wolf Kahn, one of America’s premier contemporary landscape painters, has drawn inspiration from artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Chaim Soutine. Wolf Kahn’s Barns features approximately 40 drawings and paintings that explore the concept of confrontation conveyed by a large, solitary structure. He explores barns with a bold color palette in his pastel and oil paintings. Kahn uses his imagination to make his paintings an extension of nature. “When I look at a barn, it is never the barn itself that engages me,” Kahn says, “but the way it grows out of the land, the way the sky and trees surround it, and how the horizon is interrupted by the barn’s silhouette.”
