Rock Solid
Can we just take a minute to share a recent, spur-of-the-moment mid-week meal at one of our favorite restaurants – Peninsula Grill. Last Wednesday night, the stars aligned and this editor ended up at downtown’s most venerated restaurant, indulging in a fattening, glorious multi-course dinner, which began with a Grey Goose martini. If that’s not decadent, I don’t know what is. A dozen raw oysters, a half-dozen fried BBQ ones, and a trio of soups followed, throwing us down that slippery slope into a full-on 20-point dinner (you Weight Watchers dabblers will know what I’m talking ’bout). We ended the night with a coconut cake and a banana panna cotta in a to-go bag, which we dutifully took home to share with the family. The highlight of the night was definitely the teeny-tiny cup of lobster and corn chowder with a dollop of basil butter floating on top. I’m drooling just thinking about it. –Stephanie Barna
The Cob Does the Job
Corn and ice cream may sound incompatible, but Ben & Jerry’s stores nationwide will soon be bringing the two together in an unexpected marriage. Ben & Jerry’s has announced plans to switch to 100-percent corn-based packaging for their drink cups starting this fall. The cups are produced by Fabri-Kal Corporation’s Greenware line and made totally from American-grown corn, a renewable resource that will allow for the cups to be fully compostable. The corn cups will be used for smoothies and frozen drinks and will feature a colorful cow and pasture scene. –Matthew Gannon
Cold Stone, Not Cold Heart
Cold Stone Creamery partners with the Make-A-Wish Foundation for one cool fund-raiser. On Thurs. Sept. 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. every Cold Stone location will give you a free 3 oz. serving of the featured ice cream, Cole’s Creation, if you donate to Make-A-Wish. The ice cream is named after a 10-year-old boy whose dream of meeting the NYC firefighters was made a reality by the Make-A-Wish Foundation in March 2004. Cole’s Creation is a combination of chocolate ice cream, yellow cake, chocolate chips, and rainbow sprinkles. Yum. –MG
