Dizzy Jazz Festival

This year, the S.C. Jazz Festival, set for Oct. 20-21 in the upstate town of Cheraw, celebrates the career of native son and jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, a post-swing pioneer who composed, recorded, and collaborated with the greats of the be-bop era and beyond. The festival coincides with the 89th anniversary of the late jazz legend’s birth and showcases an art form pioneered by Gillespie. The main act is The Mike Longo Trio, comprised of former Dizzy Gillespie band members (one might hear a rendition of such Dizzy tunes as “Salt Peanuts,” “Hot House,” or “Night in Tunisia”). The festival’s “Bebop Series” will include free concerts at the Dizzy Gillespie Home Site Park and the Theatre on the Green. For more info, contact the Cheraw Arts Commission at 843-537-8422 or visit www.cheraw.com. –T. Ballard Lesemann
