Every mass method of producing electricity has major flaws, but coal is the arch-villain of the bunch, responsible
for dirty water, mountain-top chops, and smoggy days. Earlier this month the U.S. Supreme Court heard Environmental Defense v. Duke Energy Corp. and, pending their ruling, the Carolina-based utility may be forced to clean up their emissions across the board, setting a precedent for the coal burning plants that currently generate 40 percent of South Carolina’s power. By 2020, coal’s percentage of our total energy yield will have dropped, despite estimates that we’ll be burning 15 percent more than today.
