The Charleston County School Board honored Superintendent Maria Goodloe Johnson at their final meeting before her exit Tuesday night with well wishes and a few kind jabs.

It began with the board offering long-stem roses and a framed photo of the board that Goodloe-Johnson can take with her to her new office in Seattle. Because thatโ€™s what she wants โ€” a looming picture of the Charleston district. You could just see a few board members (you know the ones) counting the tax dollars spent on the roses.

Well wishes came from all of the board members. Arthur Ravenel got in one more โ€œDr. Mariaโ€ before he sent her off saying, โ€œI have a Ravenel relative up there,โ€ followed by a long pause and a kind, friendly smile before he told her that he’d tell the fella’ to treat her nice. His buddy, Ray Toler, tried to pooh-pooh her move one more time by noting what a train wreck the Seattle board is, to which Goodloe-Johnson again responded, โ€œYou prepared me well.โ€

Brian Moody was the one that looked forward, considering a future without the superintendent.

โ€œThis board is committed largely because of your leadership,โ€ Moody said. โ€œHopefully thereโ€™s a legacy of a strategy.โ€
