Jazz Society B-Day
This weekend marks the first anniversary for the Charleston Jazz Society, a not-for-profit organization incorporated to be an “effective advocate for jazz as an art form by furthering awareness and appreciation through performance and education.” On Sun. July 22, the organization presents a special performance. “It’s a stellar lineup of our past performers,” reports the organization’s John Robinson, a former D.C./N.Y.C-based jazz musician now based in town. The lineup features trumpeters Charlton Singleton and Kevin Hackler, drummers Quentin Baxter and David Patterson, bassist Kevin Hamilton, vocalists Ann Caldwell and Duda Lucena, keyboardists Tommy Gill and Richard White, sax player Mark Sturbank, and other guests The event takes place at the Charleston Marriott (170 Lockwood Dr.) at 4 p.m. Advance tickets are available for $25 downtown at Gallery Chuma (722-7568) and Nancy’s (722-1272). Top Brass: Warriors
The Wando High School Band has been selected to attend and perform at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago this December, the premier band conference in the world and the highest honor bestowed upon a high school concert band. Wando’s symphonic group, made up of the full program’s 68 best players, are one of only six worldwide who made the cut. They will perform a one-hour concert on Dec. 21 at the Chicago Hilton and Towers Hotel. —Stratton Lawrence
