With the record success of Hairspray last week (and I have to say, it’s now my favorite movie musical — and I’m seen many) there’s news that the developers of the Aussie musical Priscilla, Queen of the Desert are looking to bring the production stateside.
Priscilla is aimed squarely at the Mamma Mia! market, which is about as lucrative as it gets. The ABBA musical has grossed $2 billion around the world. Priscilla ain’t in that league yet, but its Australian producers have begun laying the groundwork for London and Broadway.
For those needing more of a movie musical fix, Sweeney Todd is due out later this year and Mamma Mia! should follow next year.
