Dear South Carolina Stonewall Democrats,

Thanks so much to all of you who attended the organizational meeting for the South Carolina Stonewall Democrats on Wednesday, August 8. What a great, smart, committed group of people we had! We had 17 people attend and our e-mail list is up to 50 now!

I am writing to kind of re-cap the meeting for everyone and attaching an agenda for those who weren’t able to make the meeting.

A Steering Committee has been established to help put together mission statement, by-laws, legal filings, and a simple strategic plan. The good folks who volunteered for this important assignment are Tasha Gandy, Sam Moskow, Susie Prueter, Keith Riddle, Mike Schwarzott, and Cheryl Soucy. Thank you! This group will have documents ready to vote on at our next meeting.

There was discussion about establishing a Statewide Chapter versus a Lowcountry Chapter. The group came to a consensus to start a Statewide Chapter. It was decided that it was important to have a chapter for everyone in the state to have access to and as we grew, there could possibly be coordinators in different areas of the State. The strategic plan would have a Lowcountry focus to begin with because most of the members are in the Charleston area, but the plan would grow as the membership grew. We also discussed possible 2008 races in the Lowcountry that would be of interest to GLBT Dems and allies from around the State. We will need everyone!

Everyone is encouraged to join National Stonewall Democrats for $35+ by going online at and the SC State Democratic Party for $25+ at Membership to the National Stonewall Democrats will also serve as official membership to the South Carolina Stonewall Democrats. Please identify yourself anywhere you can on these websites as a “South Carolina Stonewall Democrat” so they track our numbers and our support! We also have to keep a Membership Roster. It would be great if everyone could send me their home address, home phone, and cell phone to go with the e-mail addresses I have. (If you were at the meeting, I got it!) Let me know if you joined NSD and/or SCDP … but no pressure to … we just want everyone involved!

We also discussed the inclusion of GLBT folks in the SC Democratic Party’s Delegate Selection Plan to the Democratic National Convention. The Party has set a goal of sending 3 openly gay people to the National Convention in Denver in 2008. Tom Chorlton volunteered to summarize the extensive plan to help SCSD and those interested in running understand deadlines, requirements, etc. Thank you, Tom! Let’s send not just 3 openly gay delegates, but 5!

Here are some upcoming events … the South Carolina Stonewall Democrats will be having a booth at South Carolina Gay & Lesbian Pride in Columbia on Saturday 9/22. We need volunteers to man the booth in shifts from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Holler if you want to help out!

The Charleston County Democrats are gathering at the River Dogs baseball game on Thursday 8/23 for a picnic and the game. Come on out, wear your SCSD buttons, meet your fellow Dems and show the Democratic Party the support of the GLBT community! And it will be a great opportunity to thank Waring Howe (Chs Dems County Chair) for his support in making sure GLBT folks are included as delegates to the National Convention. Picnic starts at 6:00 PM and game at 7:00 PM. Ticket information to come!

Finally, special thanks to Tasha Gandy and all the many folks who came out to work the CNN/You Tube Democratic Debate. The South Carolina Stonewall Democrats made a huge splash at the event by providing great volunteers and organizational leadership! Carol Fowler, the SC Democratic Party State Chair, included the Stonewall Democrats in her thanks just before the debate went on the air! Lots of great things happened and continue to happen because of the presence Stonewall Democrats had at the debate. It was a historic night for GLBT Democrats in South Carolina!

If you know anyone who would be interested in participating in the South Carolina Stonewall Democrats, please spread the word! Our next meeting will be at the Sunfire Grill on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at 6:00 PM.

Best wishes,

Susie Prueter
