It’s official: South Windermere Cinemas, West Ashley’s only family-run moviehouse, is closing for good. A bunch of fans of the $3-a-ticket venue will be saying farewell to the managers with a party on Wednesday, September 12 from 6-9 p.m.
Everyone who’s ever caught a cheap flick there is invited, as well as all the people who kept meaning to go but never got round to it. They’re invited to bring their own food and drink, listen to live music by Shrimp City Slim and Dr. Pickup, and take a last look at the exotic pets, comfy old-style seats and the lived-in-looking lobby before the theatre shuts up shop to becomes a retail space.
It will also be a chance to say goodbye and thankyou to Sandra Purro and her son Michael, who’ve been working hard to keep the place open for the past few years. Above all we’ll miss their banter, the beer and the friendly, informal atmosphere.
