After much anticipation, I attended my first Art Walk last Friday. I’d heard a few negative things about it (mainly from art snobs), but I was pretty stoked for what sounded like a free wine and cheese party on the streets of downtown Charleston. And that’s pretty much what it was. Although in a way, it’s a great avenue to promote art, it was often frustrating because it was difficult to actually see the art. Packed sidewalks and doorways made it a challenge to get into the galleries, and if I stopped in front of a painting to ponder it for a moment, I’d likely find myself holding up a line of people waiting to get by (usually to get closer to the refreshments). After hitting up a number of galleries, they all started to look the same and I got tired of saying “Excuse me,” so I trekked back to my car (many blocks away — parking was horrendous) and headed to Five Guys in Mt. P (THE best burger you will ever have and a fabulous taste of home). Anyway, I went there for a party, and I guess that’s what I got, but I wish there had been a bit more focus on the art. Either way, it gave me a taste for the galleries, and I’ll go back soon for some closer looks.
