There were some unlikely winners in South Carolina campaign cash, according to 3rd quarter filings posted on the New York Times web site. Here’s a few observations:

• First and I have to say that I thought it was a mistake, second in statewide Democratic fundraising for the third quarter was New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who reportedly collected more than $85,000.  Richardson only raised a little more than $27,000 in the first half of the year, and, for comparison, other second tier candidates raised less than $20,000 combined in the third quarter.

• Rudy Giuliani was the big GOP winner, with more than $114,000 in fundraising, consistent with his collections in the first two quarters of the year.

• John McCain saw a dramatic drop in South Carolina cash, from $171,000 in 2nd quarter to $60,000. My guess is that restructuring his S.C. staff may have been a factor.

• Mitt Romney’s S.C. pool continued to dry up in the third quarter, falling from more than $170,000 in the first quarter of the year to $95,000 in round two, to $36,500 in the latest filing.

• Hillary had a good showing, with $54,000 in the third quarter (a record quarter for her campaign and $20,000 more than Barack Obama raised in the same period).

• But John Edwards continued to prove his fundraising support in South Carolina with $87,000 for the period, leading Dems.
