The Charleston FD and Chief Rusty Thomas are the focus of a cover story in this month’s issue of Fire Chief magazine, which you can pick up at your local….um…who knows where? Just click here to read the online story.

Personally, I haven’t read it yet, but I think I got an idea of what to expect judging from this bit from an article in today’s P&C about the FD.

Janet Wilmoth, editorial director for Fire Chief magazine, recently traveled to Charleston to interview Fire Chief Rusty Thomas for a cover story in the magazine’s October issue. She said she was surprised by the Fire Department’s old-style approach, with Thomas running all aspects of the operation, from hiring to purchasing, while still responding to fire alarms.

“It was like stepping into a fire department from the 1960s,” she said. “I’m sure there are still fire departments across the United States that are like that, but one that services a city the size of Charleston?
