Doppelgänger

Thurs., Jan. 17, 9 p.m.; $8; Theatre 99; www.myspace.com/dopplegangerrocks

Doppelgänger is the kind of washed-up D-list rock band you might see spouting off on I Love the ’80s. Except they might not have even made the cut.

Lee Lewis and Jason Cooper are the magic duo behind this act, inspired by VH1’s Storytellers. The combination of Cooper’s encyclopedic knowledge of ’80s rock riffs and his experience in local bands Weird Science and Playlist, along with Lewis’ innate ability to ramble and sing lead results in collaborations that give Tenacious D a run for its money.

The sounds are rockin’ and you’ll want to bang your head, but you might have trouble because you’ll be laughing so hard. What makes this show unique is the pair’s devotion to their respective characters — in improv it’s rare to play one role for so long. Now, 25 shows in, they’ve got a glorious back-history and close connection to their characters.
